Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix vermicularis, and is a cause of acute abdomen most often in children and adults. Acute appendicitis is a surgical emergency cases are most commonly found in children and adolescents. There are about 250,000 cases of appendicitis which occurred in the United States each year and primarily occurs in children aged 6-10 years.

Appendicitis can be of all age groups, although not common in children before school age. Almost one third of children with acute appendicitis is perforated after surgery. Despite the increase in fluid resuscitation and better antibiotics, appendicitis in children, especially preschoolers still have significant morbidity.

Diagnosis of acute appendicitis in children is sometimes difficult. Right diagnosis is made only in 50-70% of patients at the time of initial assessment.
