The impact of diabetes on dental health

More than 200 million people in the world suffer from diabetes. From the results of epidemiological studies: 2.4 to 3.75 of Indonesia's population suffer from Diabetes Mellitus.

Many dentists managed to detect a patient's diabetes teeth (though perhaps not yet realized by the patient), characterized by the occurrence of abnormalities found in the oral cavity.

Diabetes mellitus is a disease where there is a deficiency of the hormone insulin in the blood, so blood sugar levels became high.

The food we eat will be converted into glucose, glucose would be converted into glycogen and with the help of insulin, glucagon would be converted into glycogen. Some of glucagon will be stored in the blood and liver.

The main symptoms of diabetes are
Polyuria (frequent urination)
Polidipsi (often feel thirsty so much to drink)
Poliphagia (often feel hungry)
Limp
Weight loss for no apparent reason

In addition to the main symptoms experienced by people with diabetes, there are also abnormalities in the mouth that often accompany diabetes mellitus are:

Xerostomia (dry mouth)
Impaired salivary gland function so that saliva and cause a little halitosis acetone

Periodontal disease (buffer dental tissue disease)
Due to a narrowing of blood vessels, so bleeding gums, pale gums and oral cavity, and also an infection of the gums

A sense of pulsing in the teeth, without dental caries in
The presence of oral candidiasis: presence of fungi in the mouth
Teeth often rocking and happening fast shrinking jaw bone
Impaired wound healing, including wounds inside and outside the oral cavity
